Growth
Quantitative increase in size, mass, and dimension of the body.
Development
Qualitative process involving maturation, differentiation, and functional specialization of tissues and organs.
Physiologic spacing
Common and normal spacing (also known as primate spaces) present during the primary dentition stage.
Early mixed dentition
Phase of mixed dentition occurring from 6-8 yrs featuring the eruption of 1st permanent molars, permanent central incisors, and permanent lateral incisors.
Intertransitional period
Relatively stable phase of mixed dentition from 8-10 yrs w/ few eruption changes while jaws continue to grow.
Late mixed dentition
Phase of mixed dentition from 10-12 yrs featuring permanent canines, 1st & 2nd premolars, and 2nd permanent molars beginning to erupt near the end of the stage.
Ugly duckling stage
Temporary spacing of maxillary incisors that may occur as a normal developmental phase during mixed dentition.
Permanent dentition stage
Dentition stage at 12 yrs & older characterized by the presence of 28 permanent teeth before third molars erupt.
Craniofacial Growth
Process by which the bones of the skull (cranium) and face (facial skeleton) increase in size, change in shape, and mature from infancy to adulthood.
Cranium
Component of the craniofacial complex that protects the brain, growing rapidly in early life with most growth completed by 6-7 years of age.
Cranial Base
Foundation of the facial skeleton that grows through cartilage and influences the position of the maxilla and mandible.
Maxilla
Upper jaw structure that develops by intramembranous ossification, grows at the sutures, and moves downward and forward because of bone deposition and remodeling.
Mandible
Lower jaw bone that develops by intramembranous ossification, except for the condyle which grows through cartilage (endochondral ossification).
Bone deposition
Formation of new bone by osteoblasts.
Bone resorption
Removal of bone by osteoclasts.
Bone remodeling
Simultaneous deposition and resorption that changes the shape and position of bones.
Bone displacement
Movement of bones as they grow and surrounding structures enlarge.
Eruption pattern
The normal sequence, timing, and path which teeth emerge from the alveolar bone into the oral cavity and reach their functional position in the dental arch.
Eruption path
The direction in which teeth should erupt vertically into their proper position within the dental arch.
Delayed eruption
Abnormal eruption path clinical problem where a tooth erupts significantly later than expected.
Ectopic eruption
Abnormal eruption path clinical problem where a tooth erupts in an abnormal position.
Impacted tooth
Tooth that fails to erupt because it's blocked by bone, soft tissue, or another tooth.
Premature eruption
Condition where a tooth erupts earlier than the expected age.
