Conjunct melody
A melody that moves in small steps- e.g. opening theme of ode to joy
Disjunct
Melody that moves in leaps e.g. Mozart queen of the night aria
Triadic melody
Melody that uses notes from a triad chord e.g. Haydn surprise symphony
Broken chords melody
Plays notes of a chord separately. Often sounds like an arpeggio e.g. Bach prelude in c major
Scalic
Moves up or down in a stepwise motion, following pattern of a scale e.g. Mozart rondo alla turca
Arpeggio
Plays notes of a chord one at a time often across different octaves e.g. moonlight sonata(the left hand)
Passing notes
A note that links the two notes before and after it. E.g. Mozart piano sonata no16 in c major mov 1
Diatonic
Music that uses notes from a major or minor scale e.g.,Mozart piano sonata no11 opening theme
Chromatic
Notes that aren’t in the key signature are frequently used e.g. Chopin prelude in e minor
Slide/portamento
Singer slides from one note to another e.g. queen of the night aria
Ornamentation -trills, mordents, appoggiaturas and acciaccaturas and turns.
Short extra notes that add decoration
Mordent
Ornament common in baroque music- start off like a trill and end on the written note that is held slightly longer e.g. Haydn piano sonata no1 in f minor
Turn
An ornament that goes in the pattern of note above, note, note below, note e.g. aria from Goldberg variations
Appoggiatura
Starts On a note that clashes with chord and then moves to a note in the chord. E.g. voi che sácate
Acciacatura
Note played before main note as fast as possible e.g. nocturne in e flat major op9 no2
Ostinato
A musical pattern which repeats over and over again, like ground bass e.g. passacaglia and fugue
Phrasing
Like a musical sentence. E.g. string quartet in c major Haydn
Articulation- staccato, slur, tenuto(held slightly longer)
