Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)

A stye sheet language used for describing the presentation of a document written in markup language like HTML.

External Stylesheet

Types of CSS Styles

Styles that are written on a separate document best used to control styling on multiple pages

Internal Stylesheet

Also known as embedded stylesheet. Style best used to control styling on one page.

Inline Stylesheet

Styles that are written directly in the tag in the HTML document which affect only the specific tag they’re applied to

Cascading Order

An algorithm that defines how to combine property values originating from diff. sources

1. Inline
2. Internal
3. External
4. Browser default

CSS Rule Structure

Made up of a SELECTOR and a DECLARATION.

Declaration

Consists of property and value

Selectors

Patterns used to select the elements you want to style

CSS Properties

Dictates how a certain aspect of the selector will be changed visually

CSS Values

There are many types to consider, from numerical values to colors to functions that perform a certain action

Ex. 45px, 50%, #ffffff

Background

Holds the theme of the website

Readability Issue

It is difficult for a person to read text on a screen than in print. It is the job of a web designer to remove this difficulty.

Typography

The art and technique of arranging type to make written language legible, readable, and appealing when displayed.

Hierarchy

Used to guide the reader’s eye to whatever is most important

Leading

The space between lines of text, AKA line spacing

Tracking

Overall space between characters, sometimes called character spacing

Kerning

Space between specific characters

Font

AKA typeface, pertains to the style of lettering used in various media such as print and web

Font family

Group of similar typefaces

CSS Box Model

A set of rules that defines how every element in a web page is rendered
