in my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I've been turning over in my mind ever since “Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone,” he told me, “just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you've had.” He didn't say anymore but we've always been unusually communicative in a reserved way, and I understood that he meant a great deal more than that. Gatsby the man who gives his name to this story, represented everything for which I had an unaffected scorn. But personality is an unbroken series of successful gestures, then there was something…. gorgeous about him ….. some heightened sensitivity to the promises of life. He had an extraordinary gift for hope, a romantic readiness such as I have never found in any other person… and which it is not likely i shall ever find again.
