Freeway Entrance Ramps
Entrance ramps with more than one travel lane, each controlled by its own ramp meter.
High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) Bypass Lanes
Lanes marked with a diamond on the pavement that are not metered and can be used by carpools of two or more people.
Lane Use Control Signals
Allow lanes to be used by traffic from different directions at different times.
Overhead Freeway Signals
Signals indicating the speed limit has been reduced due to a crash ahead.
High-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes
One or more lanes of a roadway that have restrictions on use to encourage ridesharing.
Goal of HOV Lanes
Provide an incentive to use ridesharing and public transportation, remove congestion from normal lanes of travel, and improve overall traffic operations
Deceleration Lane
A special lane for drivers to use before reaching the exit ramp, used to avoid slowing down on the freeway itself.
Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS)
Prevents skidding and allows drivers to steer during an emergency braking situation.
How to use Four-Wheel ABS
push the brake pedal down hard, hold it down firmly and steer in the direction you want the car to go.
Rear-Wheel Anti-Lock Brakes
Prevents the rear wheels from locking up so the back end of the vehicle does not skid sideways.
