deception

lying is allowed to a certain point, but it has to be justifiable and revealed at the end of the study

freedom to withdraw during the study

participants can stop at any time for any reason. payment and credit must be given before the study, and the researcher cannot take it back

protection from harm

participants are protected from physical and psychological harm; if harm is justifiable, it cannot be long term. researchers are allowed to make participants uncomfortable

confidentiality

researcher cannot release personal identity or information (description) about participants

debriefing

after the study, researchers must give participants a _______. the true purpose must be stated if deception was used, and any confederates must be revealed. subjects are able to ask questions and contact researchers in the long term

confederate

an “actor” in the experiment. they are someone who also participates in the experiment but is secretly working with the experimenter
