Director
The creative leader of the film who guides the story, performances, camera work, and overall vision.
Producer
Oversees the entire production, including finances, logistics, hiring crew, and ensuring the film gets completed.
Executive Producer
Secures financing or provides major oversight of the production; often involved in high-level decisions.
Line Producer
Manages the production budget and day-to-day operations of the shoot.
Production Manager
Handles scheduling, crew coordination, and production logistics.
Assistant Director (1st AD)
Runs the set during filming, manages the shooting schedule, and keeps the production on time.
2nd Assistant Director
Prepares call sheets, coordinates cast movement, and assists the 1st AD.
Director of Photography (Cinematographer)
Designs the visual look of the film through lighting, lenses, and camera movement.
Camera Operator
Physically operates the camera during filming.
1st Assistant Camera (Focus Puller)
Maintains focus during shots and manages the camera equipment.
2nd Assistant Camera (Clapper Loader)
Operates the slate (clapperboard), handles camera media, and assists the camera department.
Gaffer
Head of the lighting department; executes the lighting design created with the cinematographer.
Best Boy (Electric)
Second-in-command of the lighting department; manages equipment and electricians.
Key Grip
Head of the grip department; manages rigging, camera support, and light control tools.
Best Boy Grip
Assistant to the key grip who helps manage crew and equipment.
Production Designer
Designs the visual world of the film including sets, locations, color palette, and style.
Art Director
Manages the art department and oversees set construction and design details.
Set Decorator
Responsible for furniture, decorations, and objects placed on the set.
Costume Designer
Designs clothing for characters to match the story, time period, and personality.
Makeup Artist
Applies makeup for characters, including beauty, aging, or special effects makeup.
Sound Mixer (Production Sound Mixer)
Records and mixes audio on set during filming.
Boom Operator
Holds and positions the boom microphone to capture dialogue.
Script Supervisor
Tracks continuity and ensures dialogue and actions match between takes.
Editor
Assembles the filmed footage into the final story during post-production.
Production Assistant (PA)
Entry-level crew member who assists different departments with general tasks.
Above the line
refers to the creative leadership and primary talent who shape the project and are usually hired early. Their pay is often negotiated individually and can be a big portion of the budget.
Below the line
refers to the technical crew and production staff who physically make the film happen during production and post-production. Their pay is typically standardized through contracts or unions.
Visual Effects Supervisor
Leads the VFX team and ensures all digital effects match the director’s vision.
VFX Producer
Manages the VFX schedule, budget, and coordination between departments.
On-Set VFX Supervisor
Represents the VFX department during filming and ensures the footage will work for later effects.
VFX Coordinator
Organizes communication, schedules, and shot tracking for the VFX team.
CG Supervisor
Oversees the creation of computer-generated imagery and the CG artists.
VFX Editor
Organizes VFX shots and updates versions of visual effects within the edit.
Previsualization Artist (Previs Artist)
Creates rough 3D versions of scenes to plan shots and camera movement before filming.
Layout Artist
Translates the previs or footage into a 3D scene with cameras and staging for animation.
Modeler
Builds 3D models of characters, environments, and objects
Texture Artist
Creates surface details such as color, scratches, and materials for 3D models.
Look Development Artist
Defines how digital assets will appear under lighting and rendering.
Rigger
Builds digital skeletons and control systems so characters or objects can be animated.
Animator
Creates movement for characters, creatures, or objects in a scene.
FX Artist
Creates dynamic simulations such as explosions, fire, water, smoke, and destruction.
Crowd Artist
Generates large groups of digital characters for scenes like battles or stadiums.
Matchmove Artist (Tracking Artist)
Tracks the motion of real cameras so CG elements match the live-action footage.
Roto Artist (Rotoscoping Artist)
Cuts out objects or actors frame-by-frame from footage so VFX elements can be added.
Paint / Cleanup Artist
Removes unwanted elements like wires, markers, or crew from footage.
Lighting Artist
Creates lighting for CG scenes so they match the lighting in the live footage.
Compositor
Combines all visual elements (live footage, CG, effects, matte paintings) into the final shot.
Rendering Artist / Rendering TD
Processes 3D scenes into final images using render software.
Matte Painter
Creates digital backgrounds and environments.
Environment Artist
Builds large digital landscapes or worlds used in visual effects.
Pipeline TD (Technical Director)
Develops tools and workflows that allow artists and software to work together efficiently.
Virtual Production Supervisor
Oversees real-time VFX workflows such as LED volumes and game engine environments.
