what is the purpose of inferential statistics?
to know whether there was a real effect of the independent variable on the dependent variable
what is probability?
the likelihood of an event occurring
why do inferential tests use probability?
to test the likelihood or difference between the data sets being due to chance factors or something else
when are results considered significant?
when they could not have risen by chance
what is meant by significant at p<0.05?
there is a 5% possibility that results did occur by chance
what is a type I error?
occurs because the level of significance was too lenient and the null hypothesis should have been retained
what is a type II error?
occurs when the level of significance was too stringent and retaining the null hypothesis when there was actually a real effect
what is nominal data?
in the form of categories
what is ordinal data?
data that is ordered in some way
what is interval/ratio data?
measured where real measurements are involved, such as age or height
