What are the four fundamental characteristics for effective data communication system?
delivery - correct destination or intended user
accuracy - no alteration or corruption
timeliness - no delays
jitter - variation in packet arrival time
Explain data transmission modes (simplex, half duplex, etc.)
Simplex - one way(e.g. tv, radio)
Half Duplex - two-way, but not same time (e.g. citizens band, walkie-talkie)
Full Duplex - two-way and same time (e.g. telephone, cellphone)
Explain data transmission types
Serial Transmission
bits transmitted one after another
slower, long distance
Parallel Transmission
bits transmitted all at once
faster, shorter distance
Explain DTE and DCE
Data Terminal Equipment - source or destination of data
Data Communications Equipment - “middleman”, takes data from DTE then convert it into signal that can travel over a network
Explain Line Configuration
Two-Point or Point-to-Point - connected exclusively in one link
Multipoint - two or more devices sharing a link, used to interconnect a mainframe computer to many computers
Define client and server
Client - requests service or resource
Server - provides service, stores data, and shares resources
Explain network criteria
Performance - measure of how fast and efficient the network is
Reliability - how dependable the network is
Security - protection of data
