They are useful as a preliminary tool for research

They are relatively quick and cheap to carry out

→ this is because researchers are able to use existing data (secondary data) so they do not have to waste time and money on controlled experiments

  • This is a classic bell-shaped curve.

  • Many human characteristics are normally distributed, such as shoe size and intelligence. A normal distribution has a number of defining features:
