Meter Beat Strengths
Downbeats are strong; upbeats are weak; each meter has its own pattern of strong and weak beats
Rhythm
how long or short each note is

Note Head
the oval part of the note
Stem
the vertical line attached to the note head
Beam
a horizontal line that connects two or more notes together
Dot
a small period that changes the length of the note. It is placed to the right and above a line if the note is on the line
Flag
a curvy line attached to the stem that always goes to the right
Meter/Time Signature
two numbers that go at the beginning of the page and tells us how to play the music
Top Number of Time Signature
Tells us how many beats per measure
Bottom Number of Time Signature
Tells us what type of note gets the beat
Bottom Number = 4
Quarter note gets the beat
Bottom Number = 8
Eighth note gets the beat
Bottom Number = 2
Half note gets the beat
Bottom Number = 16
Sixteenth note gets the beat
Quarter Note
Gets 1 beat in 4/4
Half Note
Gets 2 beats in 4/4
Whole Note
Gets 4 beats in 4/4
Eighth Note
Gets ½ beat in 4/4

Gets ¼ beat in 4/4
Thirty-Second Note

Breve
Sometimes called a double whole note; Gets 8 beats in 4/4
