1st Amendment

Freedom of Religion, Assembly, Press, Petition, and Speech

2nd Amendment

Right to bear arms. The right to protect yourself and your family.

3rd Amendment

No quartering of soldiers. Prohibits the quartering of soldiers in homes in peacetime.

4th Amendment

No unreasonable searches or seizures. The police are not allowed to enter your home without a warrant.

5th Amendment

Amendment that sets up due process of law and protects the accused.-The right to remain silent, Double Jeopardy - cannot be tried twice for the same crime

6th Amendment

A person has the right to a fair and speedy trial by a jury. (You cannot be locked away for 20 years before your trial.)

7th Amendment

Guarantees the right to jury trial in civil/personal suits involving money ($20.00 or more), not just for criminal cases.

8th Amendment

Prohibits excessive bail amounts and cruel and unusual punishment. The punishment must fit the crime.

9th Amendment

Protects the additional rights of the people that are not specifically listed in the Bill of Rights.

10th Amendment

Powers Reserved to the States - Any powers not specifically listed in the Constitution are reserved for the states.

Amendment Process

The Constitution provides that an amendment may be proposed either by the Congress with a two-thirds majority vote in both the House of Representatives and the Senate or by a constitutional convention called for by two-thirds of the State legislatures.

Civic Duty

the idea that citizens have a responsibility to help their country by serving on a jury if called to do so

Incimination

suggesting or accusing someone of being guilty of a crime

Seizure

the act of taking property by force or legal authority; confiscated, captured, or appropriated

11th Amendment

Prohibits citizens of one state or foreign country from suing another state. You cannot sue a state.

12th Amendment

Brought about by the Jefferson/Burr tie, stated that the president and vice-president would run on the same party ticket. Before that time, all of the candidates ran against each other, with the winner becoming president and second-place becoming vice-president.

13th Amendment

The abolishment of slavery which forbids forced-slavery and involuntary servitude

14th Amendment

Equal Protection and Citizenship for all citizens regardless of race - Declares that all persons born in the U.S. are citizens and are guaranteed equal protection of the laws

15th Amendment

Reserves citizens the suffrage rights regardless of their race, color, or previous slave status. Every single male United State citizen that is of age can vote.
