Cardiorespiratory endurance
The ability to sustain prolonged, dynamic exercise.
Maximal endurance capacity
The highest level of fitness achieved through training, related to V• O2max.
Heart rate (HR)
The number of heartbeats per minute; decreases at rest and submaximal efforts with training.
Stroke volume (SV)
The amount of blood pumped by the heart with each beat; increases with endurance training.
Cardiac output (Q•)
The volume of blood the heart pumps per minute; changes minimally at rest but increases with training during maximal exercise.
Blood volume
The total volume of blood in the circulatory system; increases with training.
Lactate threshold
The exercise intensity at which lactate begins to accumulate in the bloodstream, indicating a shift to anaerobic metabolism.
HIIT
High-Intensity Interval Training; an efficient workout method that combines short bursts of intense exercise with recovery periods.
Specificity of training
The principle that training should be relevant and appropriate to the sport for which the individual is preparing.
Cross-training
Engaging in multiple types of training to enhance performance and reduce the risk of injury.
