what is leadership?
a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal
what are the important aspects of leadership?
it is a process, involves influencing other individuals (peers, boss, employees, etc.), occurs within a group, must be goals to achieve (shared by the entire group)
what characteristics make leadership a process?
it can be developed and learned, it is a transaction between leaders and followers
what is influence?
changing someone’s thoughts, behaviors, or actions over something
how does one build influence?
be credible, trustworthy, and accountable (set a good example), build a cohesive team (empower them, attitude), be open to influence, act with civility
what kind of goals must the group have?
they must be shared, achievable, and understood. use energy wisely (to influence the group toward success)
what are the six leadership styles?
transformational leadership, delegative leadership, authoritative leadership, transactional leadership, participative leadership, servant leadership
what is transformational leadership?
a leadership style that emphasizes change and transformation. this leader influences their followers to achieve more by tapping into their potential
what is delegative leadership?
focuses on delegating initiative to team members, little micromanaging
what is authoritative leadership?
leaders chart a course and encourage those around them to follow, a “follow me” approach
what is transactional leadership?
often referred to as managerial leadership, a leadership style that relies on rewards and punishments. This leadership style clearly emphasizes structure
what is participative leadership?
a leadership style that encourages leaders to listen to their employees and involve them in the decision-making process
what is servant leadership?
a leadership style that puts the needs of others first. It emphasizes creating strong relationships with those around you and focuses on enabling them to reach their full potential
