What is the Earth’s oxygen cycle?

  • Oxygen being released by photosynthesis, some of it is consumed by weathering (oxidising reduced iron and sulphur on the earth’s surface.

  • Some of it will oxidise the reduced iron and sulphur being released at spreading ridges

  • If not consumed, it can accumulate in the atmosphere.

What is the relationship between oxygen and the atmosphere?

  • Oxygen in the atmosphere is an example of a steady state in disequilibrium

  • If in equilibrium, all oxygen would be consumed

  • It exists in a steady state system, but it is not in equilibrium

How can carbon be used to look at how oxygen concentrations change?

  • By looking at how much organic carbon is preserved in the earth at a particular time.

  • Organic carbon = present in oil, shales, gas, coal.

  • A period of time with lots of organic carbon indicates high oxygen levels at the time.
