What is the Earth’s oxygen cycle?
Oxygen being released by photosynthesis, some of it is consumed by weathering (oxidising reduced iron and sulphur on the earth’s surface.
Some of it will oxidise the reduced iron and sulphur being released at spreading ridges
If not consumed, it can accumulate in the atmosphere.
What is the relationship between oxygen and the atmosphere?
Oxygen in the atmosphere is an example of a steady state in disequilibrium
If in equilibrium, all oxygen would be consumed
It exists in a steady state system, but it is not in equilibrium
How can carbon be used to look at how oxygen concentrations change?
By looking at how much organic carbon is preserved in the earth at a particular time.
Organic carbon = present in oil, shales, gas, coal.
A period of time with lots of organic carbon indicates high oxygen levels at the time.
