Covalent bonds
Form when orbitals overlap and electrons are shared in that overlapping region.
Valence Bond Theory
A theory that explains the formation of covalent bonds through the overlap of atomic orbitals.
Hybrid orbitals
Orbitals formed by the combination of two or more atomic orbitals from the same atom.
Tetrahedral arrangement
A molecular shape where four electron groups are arranged around a central atom, maximizing distance between them.
s p3 hybridization
The type of hybridization involving one s orbital and three p orbitals, resulting in four equivalent hybrid orbitals.
Sulfur trioxide angle
Referring to the 120-degree angle found in the molecular structure of sulfur trioxide.
Electron repulsion
The principle that electrons in orbitals try to get as far apart from each other as possible, influencing molecular shape.
Valence electrons
Electrons in the outermost shell of an atom involved in forming covalent bonds.
