what do the stems of many 3rd dec nouns end in?
a vowel (ε, α, ο) + sigma
majority of these nouns = stem vowel is an epsilon
few have alpha as stem-vowel (if so, then neuter)
only noun with omicron as stem-vowel = αιδως, -ους, η (shame)
what happens when an ending behinning with a vowel is added to a σ-stem?
sigma-stem nouns use the same endings as stop-, liquid-, and nasal-stem nouns, but whenever an ending behnning with a vowel is added to a σ-stem, the sigma drops out
