What is a limitation of cultural relativism?

exempting someone from wrongdoing (racism, cannabilism, apartheid, etc.just because it's a part of their "culture", things that are UNIVERSALLY WRONG is not ethnocentric

Diffusion

the process by which a cultural trait spreads from one place to another over time

Relocation Diffusion

where ideas are being diffusedby their carriers as they migrate to new areas

Expansion Diffusion

spread of an idea through an increasing population of those influenced

Contagious Expansion Diffusion

ideas are spread through close contact with nearby places (ex. diseases)

Hierarchial Expansion Diffusion

ideas spread by passing first among the most connected individuals, then spreading to other individuals (ex. large cities to small cities)

Reverse Hierarchial Diffusion

diffusion up a hierarchy (ex. little town to big city)

Stimulus

spread of an underlying principle of an idea when the idea itself cannot be spread to another culture (ex. diff mcdonalds in diff countries, halal in muslim countries, no beef in India)

Acculturation

one group of people adopt SOME of the culture traits of another culture (ex. migrants learning new languages)

Syncretism

2 cultural traits blend to make one cultural trait (ex. spanish + english = spanglish)

Cultural Convergence

tendency for cultures to become more alike, in a modern world united by improved transportation and communication

Cultural Divergence

local cultures work to separate and isolate to stop popular culture

Pidgin

a form of speech that adopts simplified grammar and limited vocab, used for communication between speakers of two different languages

What do pidgins eventually become?

creoles, original language is forgotten and becomes their first language
