Polk became president. He was serious and promised 1 term. Polk embodied Manifest Destiny and was focused on Texas/Oregon. Oregon was settled with a treaty in 1846 with England. Therefore, Texas becomes the issue.

The Mexican-American War for Texas. People like Grant, Lee, Davis, and Sherman all fought in the war. This gained false confidence for Americans because the Mexican soldiers were on parole with terrible equipment.
