what is fermentation?
metabolic process, releases energy from a sugar9or other organic molecule), produces 2 ATP, good process for small anaerobic organisms like deep swamp bacteria or innermost intestinal bacteria
what is the formula for fermentation?
glucose--> 2CO2 + 2ethanol + 2 ATP
what is cell respiration?
metabolic proces, releases energy from sugar (or other organic molecule), produces 36-38 ATP, good process for larger organisms like humans (aerobes)
what is the formula for cell respiration?
glucose + 6 O2---> 6CO2 + 6 H2O + 36-38 ATP
what is the definition of aerobes?
organisms requiring O2 for their metabolism- need oxygen
what is the definition of anaerobes?
organisms not requiring O2 for their metabolism - doesn't need oxygen
what is facultative anaerobes?
organisms that can be metabolize in conditions with or without O2; therefore they do cellular respiration and do fermentation. ex: single-celled fungi called yeast
what are products of yeast fermentation?
malt--> beer (ethanol +foam)
grape juice--> wine (ethanol)
flour and sugar--> bread (CO2-rise)
agricultural waste--> fuel (ethanol)
what are products of bacterial fermentation?
swiss cheese, sour cream, yogurt, sauerkraut, soy sauce, pickles
