To measure out a volume of liquid, start by choosing the appropriate graduated cylinder and moving the bumper to the BLANK of the graduated cylinder to protect it from breakage. Then, pour the liquid into the graduated cylinder until the BLANK of the meniscus aligns with the desired volume marking when you look at the graduated cylinder from the BLANK.

Choose the best graduated cylinder to make each measurement in a single use.
36 mL of water
5.75 mL of a sucrose solution
18.5 mL of a NaCl solution
10 mL graduated cylinder
50 mL graduated cylinder
25 mL graduated cylinder
A 50 mL graduated cylinder, a 10 mL graduated cylinder, a 25 mL graduated cylinder
Beakers are for
holding an approximate volume of liquid
Graduated cylinders are for
measuring out a volume of liquid
Erlenmeyer flasks are for
containing a stirred reaction mixture
The equation to calculate density is BLANK. Where D is the density, m is the BLANK, and V is the BLANK.
D=m/v, mass, and volume
When a vinegar and oil salad dressing separates into two layers, the oil floats on top of the vinegar. The density of the oil is BLANK the density of vinegar.
less than
In a lab experiment, gold was found to have a density of 19.3 g/cm3 and zinc was found to have a density of 7.13 g/cm3,
BLANK has a higher mass per unit volume.
At constant volume, density is BLANK proportional to mass.
Gold, directly
Consider the trendline on a graph of Mass vs. Volume of a solid or a liquid. What information can be obtained about the substance from the slope of this line?
Density
A hydrometer is the general name for a tool used to measure the BLANK of a liquid relative to that of BLANK.
density, water
For each described liquid, determine the behavior of a hydrometer calibrated around the density of pure water.
In a liquid that is more dense than water CHOOSE
In a liquid that is less dense than water CHOOSE
In a liquid with the same density as water CHOOSE
Float higher than position in pure water, float lower than position in pure water, float in same position as pure water
Suppose you are measuring the mass of a solid sample on a balance using a weigh boat. You record the data in a table.
Mass of weigh boat | 3.416 g |
---|---|
Mass of weigh boat and sample | 6.124 g |
What is the mass of the solid sample (in g)?
2.708
A concentrated salt solution has a mass of 5.34 g for a 5.00 mL sample.
What is the specific gravity of this solution? (D=M/V)
5.34g/5.00mL=1.068
A student needs to determine density of a liquid. The student determines mass of an empty flask to be 251.21 g and then adds 223 mL of liquid to it. The mass of the flask with liquid is 473.01 g.
What is the density of the solution in units of g/mL?
.995
A graduated cylinder contains 10.00 mL water. A 14.74 g piece of aluminum is added to the water, and the volume rises to 15.46 mL. What is the density of the aluminum in g/mL?
2.663
A student performed a density experiment in triplicate and recorded the data shown. Calculate the average density (in g/mL) for this experiment.
