HS Gas Detector
device used to alert crews if toxic hydrogen sulfide gas is present near oil and gas rigs so they can evacuate safely.
Safe Working Distance from Energized Lines
The required minimum approach distance workers must maintain from energized equipment to prevent electrical shock or arc flash.
Operating Mechanical Equipment
Procedures where pullers, tensioners, and bucket trucks are inspected before use, and only trained workers operate machinery while others stay clear of moving parts and pinch points.
Voltage Operation
The protocol where crews test and verify whether equipment is energized or de-energized before work begins, never assuming a line is safe.
Traveling Grounds
Temporary grounds that move with the work to provide a safe path to ground if a line accidentally becomes energized.
Bus Grounds
Grounds installed on substation bus bars during maintenance to keep equipment at ground potential and protect workers from accidental energization.
Equipment Grounds
Connections between machinery or vehicles and the earth that help prevent dangerous voltage buildup and reduce the risk of electrical shock.
Line Grounds
Grounds attached directly to power lines before work begins to ensure current travels safely to ground instead of through a worker if the line is accidentally energized.
Guard Structures
Temporary supports placed over roads, railroads, or existing power lines to prevent conductors from falling onto traffic or energized lines during wire pulling.
Insulated Bucket Trucks
Vehicles equipped with insulated booms and buckets that help protect qualified workers when working near energized lines.
Electrical Safety Gloves
Protective gear made of insulating rubber that protects workers from electrical shock and must be inspected before use.
Tag-Outs
Warning tags placed on equipment as part of lockout/tagout procedures to indicate it must not be operated.
Harnesses
Safety equipment used when working at heights on towers or bucket trucks to help prevent falls and serious injuries.
Flaggers
Personnel who control traffic around the work zone by directing vehicles safely through or around the area to protect workers and the public.
HS
Stands for hydrogen sulfide, a toxic gas that can be found near oil and gas facilities.
Why Is Safety Important?
Transmission wire pulling involves heavy equipment, high voltages, and working at heights; following safety practices prevents injuries, protects equipment, and ensures workers return home safely.
Rope Tensioner
Keeps the pulling rope tight and under control during the wire pull
Hardline tensioner
Controls the conductors tension and keeps it off the ground.
Crane
Lifts heavy equipment, and conductor reels into place.
Bucket truck
Lifts workers so they can install and guide the conductor safely.
Truck puller
Pulls the pilot rope through the transmission line before the conductor
Conductor puller
Pulls the conductor through the transmission line
Conductor reel stand
Holds the conductor reel and lets it unwind smoothly
90 degree dolly
Guides the conductor around corners without damaging it
Swivel
Connects the rope to the conductor and prevents twisting
Single torque guard
Protect the conductor from twisting during the pull
Dynamometer
Measures the pulling force and line tension.
