superior vena cava

returns deoxygenated blood to the right atrium from body regions above the heart

inferior vena cava

returns deoxygenated blood to the right atrium from body regions below the heart

pulmonary veins

return oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium

pulmonary arteries

pumps deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle to the lungs

aorta

takes oxygenated blood from the left ventricle to all parts of the body except the lungs

ligamentum arteriosum

non-functional remnant of the ductus arteriosus that allows blood to flow from the pulmonary artery to the aorta during prenatal life

coronary artery

supplies oxygenated blood to the tissue of the heart

coronary sinus

along with cardiac veins, returns deoxygenated blood to the right atrium through an opening near the tricuspid valve

mediastinum

the central compartment of the thoracic cavity, located between the two pleural sacs

apex of the heart

tip of the heart

aortic arch

shape that the heart forms above the heart

descending aorta

portion of the aorta that moves blood down behind the heart

atrioventricular sulci

shallow grooves between the atria and ventricles; location of coronary arteries and cardiac veins

interventricular sulcus

shallow groove which lies over the ventricular septum
