Compound (or complex) machine
Two or more simple machines working together as one system.
Machine
Any device that makes work easier by changing the size, direction, or point of application of a force.
Transfers force
A function of a machine that carries your effort to where the load is.
Multiplies force
A function of a machine where a small effort moves a large load.
Increases speed / distance
A function of a machine that trades force for a faster, longer motion.
Simple machines
One machine consisting of a single force-changing element that alters force size or direction once.
Simple Machine Mechanical Advantage
Mechanical advantage set by a single geometry (MA).
Compound Machine Mechanical Advantage
Multiplied advantage where MAs combine for greater output.
Chained changes
A feature of compound machines where each stage passes force to the next.
Simple machine examples
lever, pulley, ramp, wedge, screw.
Compound machine examples
bicycle, crane, scissors, car engine.
