The multi-store model of memory (MSM) describes how information flows through the memory system.

The model suggests that memory is made up of three separate (unitary) stores and that information from the environment flows through these.

What is the multi-store model of memory?

New cards
  1. Any stimulus from the environment will pass into the sensory registers- each of our 5 senses has a store in this part of the memory.

  2. Information is coded in its raw form, but mainly through iconic and echoic processes.

  3. 0.5 seconds - so if we don’t pay attention to the information then it will be decayed (forgotten)

  4. very high - the body has over 1 million cells in charge of individual senses

What is the sensory register?

  1. Basic intro

  2. How is information coded?

  3. What is the duration?

  4. What is the capacity?

processes visual information

what is the iconic sensory register?

5

processes acoustic information

what is the visual sensory register?

6

0.5 seconds - so if we don’t pay attention to the information then it will be decayed (forgotten)

what is the duration of the sensory register?

7
New cards

very high - the body has over 1 million cells in charge of individual senses

what is the capacity of the sensory register?

8
New cards
  1. 7+ / -2

  2. Acoustically

  3. 18-30 seconds

    • Maintenance rehearsal - if we keep rehearsing material to ourselves over and over we can keep information in our STM.

    • Prolonged rehearsal - if we rehearse it long enough it will be passed into our LTM

What is the STM store?

  1. Capacity

  2. Coding

  3. Duration

  4. What are the 2 processes associated with the STM store?

9

what is maintenance rehearsal?

10

what is prolonged rehearsal?

  1. Unlimited

  2. Semantically

What is the following answers for LTM?

  1. Capacity

  2. Coding

12
New cards
  1. Semantically

  2. Unlimited

  3. Even though these types of memories are stored in the LTM it has to be transferred back to the STM in order to be recalled (retrieval). According to this model, this is the case for all memories.

What is the LTM store?

  1. How is information coded?

  2. What is the capacity?

  3. How is information recalled?
