The multi-store model of memory (MSM) describes how information flows through the memory system.
The model suggests that memory is made up of three separate (unitary) stores and that information from the environment flows through these.
What is the multi-store model of memory?
Any stimulus from the environment will pass into the sensory registers- each of our 5 senses has a store in this part of the memory.
Information is coded in its raw form, but mainly through iconic and echoic processes.
0.5 seconds - so if we don’t pay attention to the information then it will be decayed (forgotten)
very high - the body has over 1 million cells in charge of individual senses
What is the sensory register?

How is information coded?
What is the duration?
What is the capacity?
processes visual information
what is the iconic sensory register?
processes acoustic information

Maintenance rehearsal - if we keep rehearsing material to ourselves over and over we can keep information in our STM.
Prolonged rehearsal - if we rehearse it long enough it will be passed into our LTM

Even though these types of memories are stored in the LTM it has to be transferred back to the STM in order to be recalled (retrieval). According to this model, this is the case for all memories.
