Border Gateway Protocol (BGP)
A routing protocol designed for use between routing domains in a mesh internetwork, primarily between ISPs.
EIGRP and OSPF
Used for communications between routers within a single routing domain, referred to as an autonomous system (AS).
BGP
Primarily used for routing between autonomous systems.
Autonomous System (AS)
Designed to hide the complexity of private networks from the public Internet.
AS Path Exchange
Edge routers for each AS exchange only as much network-reachability information as is required to access other autonomous systems (the AS path).
BGP Priority
Prioritizes stability and can be slow to converge.
Autonomous System Numbers (ASN)
Allocated to ISPs by IANA via the various regional registries.
Network Layer Reachability Information (NLRI)
Classless network prefixes used by BGP.
Path Selection Metrics for BGP
Hop count, weight, local preference, origin, and community.
BGP Port
TCP on port 179.
