What is ASD?

Pervasive developmental disorder

autism is one of the 5 PPDs, all have commonalities in communication/aocial deficits, differ in IQ levels, differ in terms of severity

Autistic disorder

apparent before age 3, impairments in social interaction, communication, and imaginative play

Autism spectrum disorder (Asperger’s disorder)

impairments in social interactions, presence of restricted interests/activities, not clinically significant/general delay in language, average to above average intelligence, least severe of the spectrum Impairments

Pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS)

atypical autism, child does not meet the criteria for a specific diagnosis, but there is severe and pervasive impairment in specified behaviors

Rett’s disorder

progressive disorder almost only in females, significant loss of previously acquired skills in at least 2 of the following areas:
