what is conformity
it’s a form of majority influence where beliefs, attitudes and behaviours of a group are adopted by an individual due to real or imagined pressures
compliance
publicly conforming to views or beliefs of a group in order to gain acceptance or avoid disapproval, whilst still maintaining private views, only maintained as long as group pressure is present
identification
when an individual adjusts their behaviours and opinions to that of a group because they identify with that group, membership is seen as desirable, want to be a part of that group as well as the members are seen as roles models, this form of conformity is both private and public but not maintained once individual leaves the group
internalisation
when the beliefs and behaviours of the majority are accepted by an individual and becomes part of their own belief system, most permanent form as even when the group is no longer present the views are still maintained
identification and internalisation
identification is temporary whereas internalisation is permanent
identification is only adjusting beliefs/opinions to identify with group whereas internalisation is converting believes and opinions to match it to those of the group
