5 Characteristics of Power
The person in power makes the rules
Groups have more power than individuals
Power can shift or change
People are motivated to get power
Power can be used for good or evil
Uses of Power
Persuasion-Convincing someone to change
Coercion-Forcing someone to change
Rewards-Give something to someone to get them to change
Expertise-Providing knowledge or wisdom to influence someone
Kinds of Power
Wealth-Pro:helps reward, Con:can get taken away as punishment
Knowledge-Pro:helps gain wisdom, Con:can be used against someone
Violence-Pro:helps enforce, Con:people can rebel against you
Max Weber
Monopoly of violence over a territory. It relies on sovereignty and power
Authority
Power that has been defined in a legal or official way
Legitimacy
When power is accepted as valid by the people
Traditional Legitimacy
Rests on history and ritual. The idea that someone or something is valid because it has always been that way
Charismatic Legitimacy
The power of force of ideas or beliefs. Typically embodied by a person
Legal-Rational Legitimacy
A system of laws that are neutral. Leaders gain acceptance because of the law
Nation
Is a cultural and or ethic entity
State
Is an institution and political entity
Sovereignty
The state makes its own laws that are not under control of any other authority
Nation-State
That the two exist together(political and cultural)
