Falling to one side when standing with feet together and eyes closed, indicating abnormal cerebellar function or inner ear dysfunction
Meningeal signs
signs and symptoms that are suggestive of meningitis. Symptoms may include neck stiffness. Signs may include nuchal rigidity, Kernig's sign, Brudzinski's sign or jolt accentuation of headache. If the provider tells you that there are no meningeal signs on examination, include it on the neurological line of the PE.
Brudzinski's sign
a diagnostic sign for meningitis that is positive when passive forward flexion of the neck causes the patient to involuntarily raise his knees or hips in flexion. Negative or positive Brudzinski’s sign is documented on the neck line of PE.
Kernig's sign
a diagnostic sign for meningitis marked by the person's inability to extend the leg completely when the thigh is flexed upon the abdomen and the person is sitting or lying down. Negative or positive Kernig's sign is documented on the musculoskeletal line of the PE.
Jolt accentuation of headache
assesses meningeal irritation. It is judged as positive if the headache is exacerbated by rotating the head horizontally two or three times per second. Positive or negative jolt accentuation is documented in the neurological line of PE.
