CHAP 10
TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS
why are transportation important? / what are transport system?
--> transportations systems are systems that connect the different locations together to enable the movement of people and goods for social interactions and economic trade. (main point then need be more specific)
characteristic of transport system ( 3 different points )
1) * density of transportation network
nodes = locations that provides entry to a transportation network
route = path for travel between nodes
transport networks = nodes that linked by routes
what is the relationship between the number of train stations ( nodes ) and routes, and the density of the transportation network?
--> when there is a higher number of train stations nodes and routes, the density of transportations networks become denser.
benefits of a denser transporation networks?
2) * quality of transport infrastructure
--> transportations infrastructure are facilities or structures that enables the movement of people and goods throughout the city
examples : bicycle parking facilities, bus stops, train station, elevators, etc
--> the reliability and performance of a transportation system depends on the quality of the transportations.
--> the quality of transport system can be measured by coverage, capacity, frequency, convenience and enviromental sustainability
(Some cities like Singapore and Hong Kong have invested heavily in developing high quality public transportation infrastructure. )
3) variety of transport modes --> through land, air, sea
why is it important for a city to have variety of transport modes?
example: suggest possible reasons why sg is building more park connectors and cycling routes within the city.
so?
WHERE ARE TRANSPORT NODES LOCATED AT CITY
--> not all transportation node are the same, some nodes are more important and known as MAJOR TRANSPORTATION NODES
--> major transportation nodes function as interchanges
( train to train ) or between transportation modes ( bus to bus ) vice versa
--> located at HIGH concentration of activities and HIGH level of accessibility
level of accessibility
--> major transport nodes are found in locations with high accessibility
--> high accessibility --> enable people to reach various destinations at a relative low cost and time
WHY ARE TRANSPORT SYSTEM LOCATED AT CITIES
= they fulfil the demand for transportation of people and goods
how do transport systems support connection?
1) unimodal transport
--> only 1 type of transportation mode is used from the start to the end of the journey
2) intermodal transport
--> multiple types of transportation modes are used from the start to the end of the journey
connection between cities
1) point to point network - harder to construct, travles faster , low cost
2) hub and spoke network - overcrowding at hubs, longer waiting time
