They talk about Baltimore and how they distribute goods out to Baltimore. And he spends a bunch of time there his whole life.

He watched him whip a women causing blood to run for half an hour. As her kids watched in fear. Man, vs Man conflict. Can’t really resolve the issue because they can’t fight back against their owners.
Federick’s mother dyeing.
This was dramatic because he didn’t know her very well and only saw her a handful of times. And she left him with no clue of who his father is. This is Man vs Man because she died, and a part of that reason is form being a slave her whole life.
Family separation
He describes being separated from his mother at birth. And having no idea who his father is. It shows how slavery breaks family apart and leaves people growing up with nothing.

Douglas says in the begging he doesn’t know his exact birthdate. Shows dehumanization of slavery and not knowing your true identity.
Separation from his mother.
Douglass is separated from his mother at birth. Shows how slavery destroys family bonds. It also, leaves Federick with emotional scars.
Rumors of his father’s identity.
Douglass mentions how many enslaved kids have white masers. Also, he hears rumors and thoughts about his Master being his father too, but he really never knows the truth. Shows sexual exploitation among slave holders.
Aunt Hesters beating.
Douglass witnesses his aunt being whipped and blood rushing down her face tied with ropes around her. Shows the violence and brutality slave holders show. It traumatized Douglass and opened his eyes.
Colonel Lloyd’s plantation.
Douglass describes the plantation to be so big it was almost like a small town. Shows the wealth and power of Lloyd. Shows Douglass it will be hard to escape and get free.
Fear of speaking.
Douglass explains some slaves are feared to speak up when it comes to injuries or health and think they will get in trouble. Shows how feared the culture was. Fuels Douglass mission.
