Mitosis
Each centrosome in an animal cell contains a pair of centrioles and an array of short microtubules (aster)
Prophase
Chromatin has condensed and centrosomes radiate microtubules and migrate to opposite poles
Prometaphase
Microtubules of mitotic spindle attach to chromosomes
Metaphase
Chromosomes attached to kinetochore fibers align at center of cell
Anaphase
Sister chromatids split, producing daughter chromosomes that are pulled to opposite poles
Telophase
Spindle disappears as new nuclear envelope re-forms around chromosomes which decompress and become chromatin
