What is potable water
ā³ Potable water is water that is safe to drink
ā³ Different to pure
How do we get potable water in the UK
ā³ Collect water from rain or rivers
ā³ Pass water through filter to get rid of large objects
ā³ Sterilise the water through filters to kill microbes (chlorine usually used)
What is desalination?
ā³ Process to turn salty water into potable water (distillation or reverse osmosis)
What does distillation include?
ā³ Boil salt soulution
ā³ Steam passes the condenser that cools the gas and turns it into water
ā³ Water is now pure
What does reverse osmosis include?
ā³ Using a membrane seperate the salts dissolved in the water
ā³ Pressurise the water and salty water corrodes the pumps
ā³ Expensive process
How is sewage water treated?
ā³ Screening and grit removal- sewage passes through metal grid that filters large objects
ā³ Sedimentation- sewage is left so that the solid sediments settle out of the water then the sediments sink to the bottom of the tank making the liquid sit avove the sediment
How to treat sewage sludge?
ā³ Anerobic treatment- bacteria is added to digest organic matter anerobically (limited supply of oxygen) which creates biogas (can be used as fuel)
ā³ The remaining sludge can be dried out and also be burned as fuel
How do you treat effluent (remaining liquid)?
ā³ Aerobic treatment- bacteeria added so that it feeds on organic matter and harmful microorganisms using aerobic repiration (oxygen needs to be present)
ā³ Bacteria is removed by allowing it to settle out
ā³ Released back into enviroment
