Opioids (Narcotics)

Drugs that have a depressant effect on the body and can be prescribed for pain; examples include heroin and fentanyl.

Opioids Signs & Symptoms

Coma (depressed level of consciousness), pinpoint pupils, respiratory depression (slow, shallow respirations), lower HR, RR, temp, relaxed muscles, sweating, and sleepiness.

Uppers

Stimulants that excite the user and are used to relieve fatigue or create feelings of well-being; examples include caffeine, methamphetamine, ritalin, cocaine, and bath salts.

Uppers Signs & Symptoms

Increased HR and RR, rapid speech, dry mouth, dilated pupils, sweating, complaining of lack of sleep, restlessness, hyperactivity, apprehension, and uncooperative behavior.

Downers

Depressants that may be used to relax, as a sleeping pill, or as a tranquilizer; examples include benzodiazepine, valium (diazepam), xanax (alprazolam), rohypnol (flunitrazepam, roofies), and GHB.

Downers Signs & Symptoms

Sluggishness, sleeping, lack of body/speech coordination, low HR and RR, and poor coordination.

Rohypnol

A downer drug (flunitrazepam, roofies) that causes sedation, confusion, and blackouts.

GHB

Gamma hydroxybutyrate (also known as grievous bodily harm, liquid G, goop), a downer drug that causes euphoria, hallucinations, and respiratory depression.

Hallucinogens

Mind-affecting drugs that produce an intense state of excitement or distortion of the user's perceptions; examples include LSD, PCP, mushrooms, and ecstasy.

Hallucinogens Signs & Symptoms

Fast HR, dilated pupils, flushed face, and behavior that may be aggressive or timid.

Volatile chemicals

Vapors that can be inhaled, producing an initial "rush" and then acting as a depressant; examples include cleaning fluid, glue, model cement, and correction fluids.

Dazed state, temporary loss with reality, coma, swollen linings of nose/mouth, numb/tingling inside head, and changes in heart rhythm.

Withdrawal

A condition characterized by shaking, anxiety, nausea, confusion/irritability, hallucinations, sweating, and increased HR & RR.
