Sex
Biological category related to reproductive function; typically male or female, with associated chromosomes and hormones.
Gender
A socially learned behavior usually associated with one's sex; a social construct describing how people identify and act along masculine or feminine lines.
Gender Role Socialization
Process of learning and internalizing culturally approved ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving; includes External Regulation and Internal Regulation.
External Regulation
Institutions (family, society, church, State, etc.) dictating what is proper based on one's identity.
Internal Regulation
Self-policing according to society's standards and norms.
Gender Stereotypes
Widely held beliefs about the characteristics, roles, and behaviors appropriate for men and women; usually binary and can be descriptive or prescriptive.
Sex Stereotype
Generalized view of traits that should be possessed by men and women, often focusing on physical and emotional roles.
Sexual Stereotype
Assumptions regarding a person's sexuality that reinforce dominant views.
Sex-Role Stereotype
Roles assigned to men and women based on their sex and expected behaviors.
Compounded Stereotype
Stereotypes about a specific group within a gender (e.g., lady guards, older men, young women).
Heteronormativity
The assumption that all people are attracted to the opposite sex and that heterosexuality is the default.
Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity and Expression
SOGIE
Sexual Orientation
It involves who one is attracted to and how one identifies with this attraction, including romantic and sexual feelings.
i) Sexual attraction, behavior, and fantasies
ii) Emotional and social preference; self-identification
iii) Heterosexual and Homosexual lifestyles
Gender Identity
One's personal experience and sense of their own gender.
Gender Expression
How one outwardly presents and communicates their gender through appearance and behavior.
LGBTQIA
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, Asexual.
Intersex
People born with sex characteristics (genitals, gonads, chromosomes) that do not fit typical binary notions of male or female.
Asexual
People who have no sexual feelings or little to no sexual attraction.
Gender Equality
The state in which all people enjoy equal conditions and opportunities to contribute to society.
Gender Norms
Societal expectations about how genders should behave.
Gender Roles
Behaviors, actions, and responsibilities considered appropriate for a given gender.
