How long did the French-Indian war last?

The war lasted from 1754-1763.

PCE: What caused the war?

Colonial expansion conflict caused it. American colonist wanted to expand westwards towards Great Lakes but the French settlement was there. This caused a lot of tension leading to territory disputes.

Albany Plan of Union (1754)

Drafted by Benjamin Franklin, involved the idea of a Grand Council with delegates of each colony to discuss Native relations, taxes, etc. Franklin wanted people to join by his banner “Join or die.” This was rejected by the colonies and Britain (it has potential to give too much power to colonies).

Peace of Paris (1673)

Treaty that ended Seven Years’ War.

  • France gave all their North American territory

    Canada, Great Lakes —> Britain

    Lousiana —> Spain

    Guadeloupe and Martinique Island —> France

  • Spain gave florida to britain in exchange for cuba and phillippines back

What were the consequences of the war?

  • Britain became major power house and center of trade

  • Britain became severely in debt

  • Ended salutary neglect

  • During the war, quakers resigned from their gov positions as pennsylvania declared war on tribes (quakers were pacifist). Ended quaker roles.

  • Native’s allies, France, is gone

  • Native’s land was not recognize in treaty and will continue to be pushed off their land

  • Native’s identity starts to shift a little as one “nationhood” bc of the war

Pontiac Rebellion (1763)

Pontiac was an Ottawa leader that led attacks and raids on the colonist. Influenced by Neolin which was the idea to reject european ties.

Proclamation of 1763

Placed by King George III to stop further Native and colonist tensions. Also reduced British finances because they would not need military presence on the fronts. Stopped colonist from expanding westward. Made colonist very mad and they would buy as much westward land as they could.
