Abnormal Head Findings
Head abnormalities including hydrocephalus, Paget's disease, acromegaly, Torticollis, and benign Pilar cyst.
Pediatric Facial Abnormalities
Facial abnormalities in pediatric patients including Fetal alcohol syndrome, Congenital hypothyroidism, Down Syndrome, and Atopic (allergic) facies.
Allergic salute & crease
An upward rubbing of the nose due to allergies that leads to a horizontal crease across the nose.
Tracheal shift
A neck finding caused by a tension pneumothorax pushing on the chest cavities.
Locations of Lymph Nodes
Pre/post auricular, occipital, tonsillar, submandibular, submental, deep cervical, supraclavicular, and posterior cervical.
Tender, mobile lymph nodes
Lymph node characteristic indicating an active infection.
Hard, fixed lymph nodes
Lymph node characteristic that raises concern for malignancy.

Confrontation test
An eye examination used to test peripheral vision.
Ektropion
An abnormal external eye finding where the lower eyelid turns outward, leading to excessive tearing.
Intropion
An abnormal external eye finding where the eyelid turns inward, causing eyelashes to rub against the cornea and irritate the eye.
Xophthalamus
Protrusion of the eyes associated with Grave's disease.
Tosis
Drooping of the eyelid resulting from CN III weakness.
Blufferitis
Inflammation of the eyelid causing burning, itching, and crusting.
Calasan
An abnormal external eye finding resulting from a blocked meibomian gland.
Stye
An acute staph infection arising from an infected eyelash follicle.
Hafeema
Blood within the anterior chamber of the eye resulting from trauma.
Terrigium
A benign growth that extends across the cornea and may affect vision.
ACAG
Acute Angle-Closure Glaucoma; a medical emergency presenting with halos, headache (HA), and nausea/vomiting (NV).
Nystagmus
Rhythmic oscillation of the eye; mild at extreme lateral gaze may be normal, but persistent nystagmus may indicate neuro-disorders, MS, brain lesions, or inner-ear disorders.
Diplopia
Double vision caused by misalignment of the eyes.
Xotropia
Outward deviation of the eye.
Esotropia
Inward deviation of the eye.
Strabismus
General eye misalignment.
Amlyopia
Permanent visual loss occurring when the brain ignores images in a weaker eye.
Ophthalmoscope
An instrument that allows APNs to observe internal eye structures like the ocular fundus, optic disc, retinal vessels, and macula.
CN VIII
The vestibulocochlear nerve.
Whisper test
A diagnostic assessment used to test hearing acuity.
Adult Pinna Technique
Pulling the pinna up and back during an internal ear examination of an adult.
Pediatric Pinna Technique
Pulling the pinna down and back during an internal ear examination of kids under 3 years old.
Healthy Tympanic Membrane
An eardrum that appears pearly-gray and translucent upon inspection.
Otitis Externa (Swimmer's Ear)
An affection of the external ear canal characterized by redness/swelling and pain/tenderness associated with the auricle or tragus.
Otitis Media (Ear Infection)
A middle ear infection accompanied by fever; internal inspection may reveal a bulging tympanic membrane and loss of the cone of light due to fluid effusion.
Perforated Tympanic Membrane
An eardrum condition marked by sudden pain followed by relief, drainage, and changes in hearing.
Tophi
A uric acid deposit located on the external ear associated with gout.
