what is anatomical position?
erect, facing forward, with upper limbs at the sides and palms facing forward
why is anatomical position important?
anatomical directional terms assume the body is in anatomical position
what does superior mean?
above another body part
what does inferior mean?
below another body part
what does anterior mean?
toward the front; also called ventral
what does posterior mean?
toward the back; also called dorsal
what does medial mean?
closer to the midline
what does lateral mean?
toward the side, away from the midline
what does bilateral mean?
paired structures, with one on each side of the body
what does ispilateral mean?
structures on the same side of the body
what does contralateral mean?
structures on opposite sides of the body
what does proximal mean?
closer to the point of attachment to the trunk or another reference point
what does distal mean?
farther to the point of attachment to the trunk or another reference point
what does superficial mean?
near the surface or outward
what does deep mean?
more internal than another structure
