Carotid Artery
The primary blood vessel supplying the head, face, and brain.
Nasolacrimal duct
The tube that carries tears from the eyes to the nose.
Nasopharynx
Consists of the upper throat and posterior nasal cavity.
Nasal septum
Consists of both bone and hyaline cartilage; composed of five things: perpendicular plate of the ethmoid bone, vomer bone, septal nasal cartilage, crest of the maxillary bone, and crest of the palatine bone.
Soft palate
The area in the back of the mouth from which the uvula hangs.
Uvula
An extension of flesh hanging off the soft palate that hangs above the throat aiding in swallowing.
Hard palate
The roof of the mouth located in front of the soft palate.
Tonsils
Swelling of mucosa lining the pharynx, which is part of the lymphatic system.
Tongue
The organ of the sense of taste; situated in the floor of the mouth.
Papillae
Peg-like projections on the superior surface of the tongue that holds taste buds.
Oropharynx
The part of the pharynx that lies between the soft palate and the hyoid bone.
Epiglottis
A flap of cartilage at the root of the tongue, which is depressed during swallowing to cover the opening of the windpipe.
Adenoid
Mass of lymphatic tissue similar to the tonsils but behind the nasal cavity and above the soft palate.
Frontal sinus
Sinuses situated behind the brow ridges.
Turbinates
Long, narrow and curled bone shelves that protrude into the breathing passage of the nose to help warm and moisturize air; consists of superior, middle, and inferior types.
Vestibule
The most anterior chamber of the nasal cavity.
Vomer
A central bone located in the nose.
Cribriform Plate of the Ethmoid Bone
The sieve-like structure through which cranial nerve I (olfactory nerve) passes to detect smell.
Sphenoid sinus
A sinus cavity located in the sphenoid bone.
Pinna
The outer portion of the external ear.
Malleus
A small bone in the middle ear that transmits vibrations of the TM (tympanic membrane) to the incus.
Incus
A small anvil-shaped bone in the middle ear that transmits vibrations from the malleus and stapes.
Tympanic membrane
A membrane in the ear that vibrates in response to sound waves.
Outer ear canal
The tube running from the outer ear to the middle ear.
Semicircular canals
Structures in the ear that aid in balance.
Cochlea
A snail-shaped bone structure in the middle ear that aids in hearing.
Eustachian tube
A canal that connects the middle ear to the nasopharynx.
Parotid gland
A pair of salivary glands located just in front of the ear lobes.
