Olfactory (I) Nerve
The sensory nerve contains axons that conduct nerve impulses for olfaction
Olfactory (I) Nerve: Location
It occupies the superior part of the nasal cavity, covering the inferior surface of the cribriform plate and extending down along the superior nasal concha
Olfactory (I) Nerve: Neurons
The olfactory sensory neurons within the olfactory epithelium are bipolar neurons, with each one has a single odor-sensitive, knob-shaped dendrite that projects from one side of the cell body and an unmyelinated axon extending from the other side
Olfactory (I) Nerve: Number of Axons
40 bundles of axons collectively form the right and left olfactory nerves that extend through the olfactory foramina in the cribriform plate of the ethmoid bone
Olfactory Bulbs
Olfactory nerves has two extensions, paired masses of gray matter, rest on the cribriform plate that process information about smells
Olfactory Tracts
Narrow bands of nerve fibers that carry smell impulses from the axon terminals of olfactory sensory neurons, through synapses with other neurons, to the olfactory cortex in the temporal lobe of the cerebrum.
