Her goodness illuminates Elizabeth’s impetuous/impulsive nature, portrait of ideal Regency femininity, shows how naïvety/goodness can be exploited, relationship with outgoing Bingley, opposites attract
Outline the 3 paragraphs for Jane
Beauty and goodness - naïvety and sadness - happy ending (goodness wins out)
“You never see a fault in anybody.” p13 P1
shows how compassionate Jane is, truly looks for the best in everyone, much less cynical than EB, looks past people’s faults to find reasons and justify their actions
“All the world are good and agreeable in your eyes.” p13 P1
Believes everyone is inherently good, does her best to find the good in people, shows her good-heartedness
“could not conceive an angel more beautiful.” Chapter 4 P1
Imagery of Jane as an angel - a higher being, so beautiful and kind that she’s divine - emphasises how beautiful she is and how moral/compassionate she is
“…never loved you as you deserve.” Chapter 24 P1
EB feels she can never show Jane all the love she deserves - EB is usually very cynical so emphasises how Jane is this amiable and thoughtful to her very core, she deserves all the love in the world for how selfless she is and everything she does for other people
“I always had a value for him.” p400 P1
When EB reveals to Jane that she’s in love with Darcy, Jane says she always knew he was a good man - outlines how Jane’s goodness and kind-heartedness means she was never clouded by prejudice as EB and MD were - emphasises her amiable nature
“With your good sense, to be so honestly blind to the follies and nonsense of others!” p13-14 P2
shows how Jane, despite being smart, doesn’t see people’s flaws as she’s always looking for the good in people and refuses to judge people without lots of evidence - means she’s susceptible to being tricked and not realising how false and rude many people really are
“I am much mistaken if we shall not find a very charming neighbour in her.” p14 P2
demonstrates Jane’s naïvety as she truly believes that Caroline Bingley is a pleasant person despite her rudeness and clear pride - blinded by her constant efforts to find the good in people
“not in her nature to question the veracity of a young man of such amiable appearance” p92 P2
shows how easily influenced Jane is by kind/charming appearances - always looking for the good in people so takes everyone at face value - can’t comprehend how immoral people can be and how much people lie - was tricked by Wickham due to his agreeable pretense
“I am sure I should be deceived again.” p157 P2
Shows how after being tricked by Caroline, Jane is aware of her naïvety but would still easily be tricked again - despite now growing and being able to see the evil in Caroline, she is certain (“sure”) she would still only see the good if it happened again
Jane FORM AND STRUCURE P2
Use of free indirect speech to show EB’s thoughts on Jane after she finds out Caroline lied to her - EB’s more cynical nature meant she was aware of this, however it is not said directly to reflect that this is still painful for Jane due to her naïvety and this being unexpected to her
“I do not deserve it.” p369 P3
“I am certainly the most fortunate creature that ever existed!” p373 P3
