Bias in headlines
through word choice, photos used, names/titles/descriptions that are given to people, bias through omission/the exclusion of source/perspectives
stereotype threat
refers to the risk of conforming to negative sterotypes of one’s race, gender, ethnicity, or culture
toxic masculinity
extreme self-reliance, supression of emotion, violence as a means to demonstrate dominance and power, the need for physical, sexual, and intellectual domination over women, objectification of women and disregard for their opinons, homophobia (denial/ suppression of the feeling and a rejection of feminity in other men)
what does toxic masculinity lead to?
higher suicide rates, overrepresentation in prision system (more likly to commit and be a victim of violence), refusal of hous when sufferening with substance abused or mental health
male gaze
a depiction of women from the perspective of a heterosexual male. it typically reduces women to an object fof pleasure through fragmentation (only showing specific parts of the body, not face)
impacts of the male gaze
leads to objectification of women that makes it easier to dehumanize them and commit crimes against them thus breeding rape culture
women and girls become more insecure about their bodies and place more emphasis on their appearance becaus esociety care about it more than their personality. women judge other women and compete for the male gaze.
