Histology

the science that studies the microscopic structure of tissues

The four general tissue types

epithelial tissue, muscle tissue, connective tissue, and nervous tissue

Epithelial tissues

cover body surfaces that are exposed to environment and line hollow organs and body cavities

Basement membrane

consists of two layers, the basal lamina and the reticular lamina

Basal surface

epithelial tissue facing the basement membrane

Apical surface

epithelial tissue facing environment, lumen or body cavity

Endothelium

simple squamous epithelium lining heart chambers and blood vessels

Mesothelium

simple squamous epithelium lines internal body cavities

Cilia

allows substances to move across apical surface

Microvilli

increases membrane surface area for transport

Goblet cells

produce mucus

Cardiac muscle

involuntary controlled and comprises most of the wall of the heart

Smooth muscle

involuntarily controlled and found in wall of blood vessels and hollow organs

Skeletal muscle

voluntarily controlled and found in skeletal muscles

Multinucleate

each cell has several nuclei

Intercalated discs

specialized cell connection that prevent cells from seperating
