Sports Medicine
Defined as a multidisciplinary approach to healthcare involving the study and application of scientific and medical knowledge to exercise, athletics, and injury prevention.
Multidisciplinary
Involving different groups of things or combining multiple groups.
American College of Sports Medicine
An organization founded in 1954 that recognized sports medicine specialists to assist athletes requiring broadly trained doctors for injuries.
Team Physicians
Healthcare professionals whose primary responsibility is to refer patients back to their Primary Care Physician (PCP).
Family Physician
A primary care provider who completes the medical history (Hx) and supervises long-term care.
Physician Assistant
A healthcare provider who provides diagnostic and therapeutic care, documents patient Hx, performs physical exams, orders labs/diagnostic studies, develops Tx plans, and follows up with patients.
Physical Therapists (PT)
Healthcare professionals who treat patients with musculoskeletal disorders and wound care.
Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA)
A professional who works closely with physical therapists to provide patient care, assisting in developing/modifying Tx plans and documenting progress.
Chiropractors
Healthcare providers focused on the conservative management of musculoskeletal disorders and functional clinical conditions, primarily using spinal manipulation.
Massage Therapist
A professional who works with the healthcare team to promote health and healing, as well as help manage stress.
NSCA
National Strength and Conditioning Association.
CSCS
Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, a credential typically requiring a post-secondary degree or education.
Sports Nutritionist
A specialist who designs special diets allowing athletes to achieve their best results in athletic events.
Fad diet
A trendy diet that quickly becomes popular and then dies down.
Sports Psychologist
A professional well versed in athletics, motivation, and performance who typically uses goal setting and imagery to assist athletes in recovering from injury or career-ending events.
Athletic Trainers
Healthcare professionals defined by rendering specialized care to individuals involved in exercise and athletics, with duties including injury prevention, recognition, evaluation, and care.
ATC
Certified Athletic Trainer; a professional who has attained certification in Athletic Training.
Title IX
Legislation that prohibits discrimination on the basis of gender regarding participation in athletics.
