States of Matter Vocabulary

Matter

Anything that takes up space and has weight. Everything around you is made of matter!

Solid

A type of matter that keeps its own shape unless you break or cut it (like a block, a book, or an apple).

Liquid

A type of matter that flows and takes the shape of whatever container it is in (like water, milk, or juice).

Gas

A type of matter that spreads out to fill all the space around it. You usually cannot see it (like air, helium in a balloon, or steam).

Property

Something about an object that you can observe using your senses—such as its color, shape, size, or texture.
