Vesicular Transport
For macromolecules that are too large for protein mediated transport.
Uses endoctyosis and exocytosis.
Endocytosis
3 types: receptor-mediated endocytosis, phagocytosis, and pinocytosis.
Receptor-Mediated Endocytosis
Highly selective; requires receptor.
Receptors for specific ligand are found on the extracellular surface of the membrane.
Phagocytosis
Involves engulfing large solid particles (dead/damaged cells, bacteria, viruses, etc).
Uses phagocyctes such as macophages and neutrophils.
Begins when the particle binds to a receptor on the phagocyte.
Pinocytosis
Enclosing the extracellular fluid non-selectively.
No receptor proteins involved.
Exocytosis
Moving cytoplasmic vesicles to the plasma membrane.
Fusing with the plasma membrane to form secretory vesicle.
Release the vesicle contents to the extracellular space.
