Valve

A tissue that controls the passage of blood and prevents back flow.

Pumper

Forces blood into an artery

Myocardium

The thick muscular wall of the heart that contracts regularly.

Artery

Blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to all body organs.

Vein

Blood vessel that carries blood from the organ to the heart.

Auricle

Cavity of the heart having thin wall, receives blood from the veins and forces it into the ventricles.

Ventricle

Cavity of the heart having a thick wall.

Bicuspid valve

Located between left auricle and left ventricle.

Tricuspid valve

Located between right auricle and right ventricle.

Sigmoid valve

Located between the left ventricle and aorta, and between the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery.

Cardiac cycle

Rhythmic and regular succession of the phases of activity of the heart.

During auricular systole

Auricles contract, blood passes from auricles to the corresponding ventricles.

During ventricular systole

Ventricles contract, blood passes from ventricle to arteries.

During diastole

Blood fills the auricles through veins.
