Internet Protocol (IP)
a set of rules governing the format of data sent over the Internet or other network.
The Internet
global system of interconnected computer networks that use the Internet protocol.
Electronic Devices
Can connect to the internet (desktop computer, laptops, smart phones, etc).
Network(s)
A set of computers connected for the purpose of sharing data.
Domain Name System (DNS)
The services that translates URL's to IP addresses (internet phone book).
Browser(s)
Software that allows us to access the internet.
Web server
computer system that processes requests via HTTP, the basic network protocol used to distribute information on the World Wide Web.
IP address
A number that represents an address of a device connected to the internet.
IPv6
128 bit IP addressing system replacing IPv4.
HTTP/HTTPS
Hypertext Transfer Protocol - language used by devices on the internet to communicate; 'S' stands for secure.
SMTP
Simple mail transfer protocol - protocol for handling internet mail.
IETF
Internet Engineering Task Force - volunteers who develop internet protocols.
Hierarchy
A system of organization.
Redundancy (fault tolerant)
Back-up systems built-in; internet has redundancy built-in.
Domain name syntax
www.tribeathletics.com -> .com is a top level domain (TLD).
Routing / routers
Computers that receive and forward data to IP addresses.
Scalability
Ability of a network to grow/ handle growth.
Redundancy of routing
Ability to handle network / physical component issues and get data from one device to another.
protocol
A set of rules to establish transmission of data on the internet.
Interfaces
Program that allows a human to interact with a device.
Packet
A digital envelope that contains data which includes sender and receiver information.
TCP/IP
Transmission Control Protocol - checks packets, orders them and sends requests for missing packets.
SSL/TLS
Secure Sockets Layering / Transport Layer Security: creates a safe link between client and server.
subdomain
For example, west.example.com and east.example.com are subdomains of the example.com domain, which in turn is a subdomain of the com top-level domain (TLD).
Digital certificate
Issued when a secured and verified link to a website has been established.
Internet vs. WWW
www is a part of the larger internet.

Streaming
A method of transmitting/receiving data as a steady continuous flow allowing playback while still receiving data (usually video or audio).
URL
Uniform Resource Locator - use a name instead of an IP address (ie - cbsd.org).
