How to determine a roman numeral (Example):
I is 1, and II is 2. If you see a roman numeral to the left of another numeral that is higher than it, subtract the lower from the higher. For instance, IV is 4 because 5 (V) minus 1 (I) equals 4. Similarly, if you see a roman numeral next to another with the one on the left being higher you add the two together. For instance, VI is 6 because 5 (V) plus 1 (I) equals 6.
Is cranial nerve I Sensory, Motor, or Mixed? What does the nerve do?
Cranial nerve I, also known as the olfactory nerve, is classified as a sensory nerve responsible for the sense of smell.
Is cranial nerve II Sensory, Motor, or Mixed? What does the nerve do?
Cranial nerve II, also known as the optic nerve, is classified as a sensory nerve responsible for vision.
Is cranial nerve III Sensory, Motor, or Mixed? What does the nerve do?
Cranial nerve III, known as the oculomotor nerve, is classified as a motor nerve that controls most of the eye's movements, as well as the constriction of the pupil and maintains an open eyelid.
Is cranial nerve IV Sensory, Motor, or Mixed? What does the nerve do?
Cranial nerve IV, also known as the trochlear nerve, is classified as a motor nerve that innervates the superior oblique muscle, enabling eye movement.
Is cranial nerve V Sensory, Motor, or Mixed? What does the nerve do?
Cranial nerve V, known as the trigeminal nerve, is classified as a mixed nerve, responsible for sensation in the face and controlling the muscles for chewing.
Is cranial nerve VI Sensory, Motor, or Mixed? What does the nerve do?
Cranial nerve VI, known as the abducens nerve, is classified as a motor nerve that controls the lateral rectus muscle, enabling outward eye movement.
Is cranial nerve VII Sensory, Motor, or Mixed? What does the nerve do?
Cranial nerve VII, known as the facial nerve, is classified as a mixed nerve. It is responsible for facial expression, taste sensations from the anterior two-thirds of the tongue, and the secretion of saliva and tears.
Is cranial nerve VIII Sensory, Motor, or Mixed? What does the nerve do?
Cranial nerve VIII, known as the vestibulocochlear nerve, is classified as a sensory nerve. It is responsible for hearing and balance by transmitting sound information from the cochlea and spatial orientation from the vestibular system.
Is cranial nerve IX Sensory, Motor, or Mixed? What does the nerve do?
Cranial nerve IX, known as the glossopharyngeal nerve, is classified as a mixed nerve. It plays a role in taste sensations from the posterior one-third of the tongue, assists in swallowing, and contributes to the secretion of saliva.
Is cranial nerve X Sensory, Motor, or Mixed? What does the nerve do?
Cranial nerve X, known as the vagus nerve, is classified as a mixed nerve. It is involved in the regulation of heart rate, gastrointestinal peristalsis, and sensory functions from the thoracic and abdominal organs.
Is cranial nerve XI Sensory, Motor, or Mixed? What does the nerve do?
Cranial nerve XI, known as the accessory nerve, is classified as a motor nerve. It controls the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles, facilitating movements such as head rotation and shoulder elevation.
Is cranial nerve XII Sensory, Motor, or Mixed? What does the nerve do?
Cranial nerve XII, known as the hypoglossal nerve, is classified as a motor nerve. It is primarily responsible for controlling the movements of the tongue, which is essential for speech and swallowing.
